Mary Liston Liepold

This time you will read about an extraordinary woman who has played a huge and positive role in the success of so many women around the world and also Afghan women. This wonderful woman is Dr. Mary Liston Liepold.

Mary Liston Liepold, Ph.D. has 35 years of experience writing and editing a wide range of materials for national nonprofits, federal and state agencies, and individual authors, and more than 10 years raising funds for major nonprofits. Dr. Liepold spent 14 years at the Child Welfare League of America, where she developed, and for 8 years edited the magazine Children’s Voice. From 2000 through 2005 she wrote speeches for CWLA President Shay Bilchik while raising several million dollars in federal and foundation grants and developing the organization’s first individual giving program. She earned her doctorate in American Literature and Linguistics from the Catholic University of America.

Mother of 4, grandmother of 5, and a daycare mom for 15 years, Dr. Liepold believes with Gandhi that if we want peace, we have to begin with the children. She also believes that if the people lead, the leaders will follow.

Mary set her hair on fire reading under the covers with a swiped cigarette lighter when she was five. She is a passionate reader, writer, editor, and activist, and a very loyal and great friend. In her view, activism flows from reading and writing “as naturally as kids have kids. Once you know what’s going on, it’s almost impossible not to tell others and to act on what you know.” She loves attending demonstrations to let history and the rest of the world know our government doesn’t speak for all Americans.

Dr. Liepold’s activism for peace and justice includes working for the international nonprofit Peace X Peace, where she worked as Editor in Chief. She also hosted on the weekly interview series Women’s Global Roundtable and blogged on Week X Week. Earlier she worked for the National Science Teachers Association and for the women’s organization Peace Links. She currently serves on the board of Little Friends for Peace, a low-budget, high-impact peace education nonprofit.

I got to know Dr. Mary Liepold through the organization Peace X Peace. Since then we are in touch. Dr. Mary Liepold played a huge role in recognizing Mrs. Fatema Gailani and Mrs. Suraya Pakzad through a special event by Peace X Peace organization in Washington DC.  This extraordinary woman has played a huge role in my life as well. Like a real mother, in all difficult and good she has stood beside me.  Her moral support, encouragement, and belief in my abilities totally shaped my life and made me work even harder by writing more, reading more, and dreaming bigger. While, I was studying for a triple major at the University of Mary Washington that I had already planned to graduate with and I did, throughout those four years, I was a writer for Peace X Peace as well. I wrote whatever I felt and Dr. Mary Liepold published them.

Dr. Mary Liepold strongly believes in equal distribution of wealth, power and resources for all. She envisions a day when there is no woman oppressed or uneducated.  Dr. Mary Liepold hopes that all women around the world must have access to education, exercise their freedoms, and have equal rights with men. This world is beautiful today with beautiful, kind-hearted, compassionate women like Dr. Mary Liepold.

Dear Dr. Mary Liepold, we [Afghan women] truly thank you for all your endless support.  You are a pride for all women around the world.
